Synopsis nr 1 – Gaetano Donizetti: Maria Stuarda

Queen Elisabetz I of England is jealous of her cousin Mary Stuart [Maria Stuarda], her rival in love and for the throne. Mary confronts and insults the Queen, who signs her death warrant. After nobly forgiving her enemies and asking God’s blessing on England, Mary is beheaded.

Synopsis nr 2 – Giuseppe Verdi: La traviata

Violetta, the „strayed one” [„traviata”] is a courtesan. Alfredo loves her jealously, not knowing that her seeming capriciousness stems from her knowledge that she is dying of tuberculosis. His own father, Germont, ends up siding with Violetta and reconciling the young lovers before her death.

Synopsis nr 3 – Giuseppe Verdi: Un ballo in maschera

In colonial Boston, the governor Riccardo has fallen in love with Amelia, the wife of his friend and secretaty Renato. At a masked ball, Renato stabs Riccardo to death, learning too late that his wife was innocent.

Synopsis nr 4 – Giuseppe Verdi: Jérusalem

In love with Hélène, Roger convinces her father that her lover, Gaston, tried to kill him. After many adventures during the Crusades, Roger repents, admits his guilt and is forgiven by Hélène’s father as Gaston is revealed a hero.

Synopsis nr 1 – Giacomo Puccini: Tosca

Tosca, a famous singer, is loved by both Cavaradossi, a starving painter, and Scarpia, the vicious chief of the police of Rome. When Scarpia tries to seduce Tosca, she stabs him to death, thinking she has tricked him into putting blanks in the rifles for Cavaradossi’s execution. But Scarpia has reneged on his promise, and Tosca is horrified when her lover is shot to death as she watches. In despair she leaps to her death from the prison walls.

Synopsis nr 2 – Umberto Giordano: Andrea Chénier

Andrea Chénier, a young poet, runs afoul of the French Revolution, despite his sympathies for its underlying ideals. He is condemned to the guillotine and joined in death by his lover Maddalena.

Synopsis nr 3  – Giacomo Meyerbeer: Gli Ugonoti [Les Huguenots]

Raoul, a Huguenot (French Protestant) nobleman, wins the heart of Margarita de Valois who is engaged to the Catholic Count de Nevers. This sets off a trail of intrigues leading to the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre (a real event of the year 1572) in which some 20,000 Huguenots were massacred in the streets of Paris.

Synopsis nr 4 – Giuseppe Verdi: Il trovatore

Leonora loves the troubadour Manrico, but the Count di Luna wants her for himself. The Count executes Manrico, but learns to his horror that the young man was actually his own brother, whom he thought killed years ago by an old gypsy. Actually, the gypsy’s daughter Azucena had rescued him and brought him up as her own son.
